5404,  Hate Me

Want to listen?  Here’s the YouTube Link:  Hate Me

I met an Old Friend for an evening hike on a familiar trail.  As we threaded the trees, the crickets chirped and she poured her heart out.  She was in an emotionally abusive relationship, temporarily stuck with a jerk.  At one point we paused on the downslope and she gestured into the darkness – “It’s like he only loves me when he makes me feel like shit.  There are good times too, but when I’m happy, he’s threatened, like he doesn’t love me anymore…”

Weeks later, I was still rolling that conversation around in my head and accidentally found this song on a solitary hike.  Much later, the relationship was safely over but the song remained.

Notes:  A few friends and I were going to rehearse Hate Me at Magnetic West.  At the last minute, the drummer had to cancel but the bassist and the lead guitarist, one of my absolute favorites, showed up.  We did a live track with me on vocals and acoustic along with the bass and lead.  I’ve always loved lush vocals (not here) and complex bass lines, and encouraged the bassist to riff on the bridge.  The tasty Telecaster sealed it.  After listening to it a few times, I decided that the song had declared itself finished.

Cheers, Listener.

Hate Me

Well I thought that you would move out when I told you

you could stay

And I thought that you would hear me when I screamed

at you that way

But you Hate Me when I’m smiling

And you need me when I cry

And we’re lost here in this wasteland

Where our passion came to die

Well the dark days were our brightest

I hid the rain behind my eyes

And I never begged for gentle

Just a hint of compromise

But you Hate Me when I’m smiling

And you need me when I cry

And we’re lost here in this wasteland

Where our passion came to die

We were high on all the laughter

And you know I loved you still

Now we’re deep within the danger

And I’ll leave

You know I will

‘Cause you Hate Me when I’m smiling

And you need me when I cry

And I’m lost here in this wasteland

Where our passion

Came to die
