Got time for a story?

Of all the songs I’ve written and recorded, Stay Home Tonight is my favorite.

I wrote this for Francine.  About the same time I’d met her and we’d fallen in love, I was tired of playing music and was ready to move on with my life.  She was and still is a tea drinker and no one lights as many candles as she does.   The song came together on a Saturday night when I was heading to another gig and she was meeting some friends somewhere else.  I just wanted to be with her and I could feel the way my life was moving on.  38 years later, we’re still together.

Notes:  Its also the most fully realized recording –  what you hear is what I heard in my head during the early stages of the song. I wrote it in the late 70’s and recorded it with some friends at Bill Basham Studio in Shrewsbury, PA.  Later, I took the reel of tape to Sheffield Studios in Jacksonville, MD for a slight remix.  There’s a link to Sheffield Audio below.

There’s another part of this.  As a kid I spent a lot of time with a stack of 78s, mostly Mills Brothers and Ink Spots.  There were some Guy Lombardo, Wayne King (The Waltz King), Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald and others mixed in, but it was Whispering Grass by the Ink Spots that really allowed me to imagine natural imagery being used as allegory in song lyrics.

In my golden moments, I am the Moonlight.  I am the Night Wind.

Stay Home Tonight has always been one of my go-to songs.  It did double duty, too – as a farewell to playing out 20+ nights per month and as a secret homage to the Ink Spots and Whispering Grass.  There’s a link to that old recording below the lyrics.  Thanks, YouTube.

Cheers, Listener.  Hope you enjoy.

Stay Home Tonight

I’ve been lying here half asleep.   I’ve got to play tonight

Cigarette air and the come-ons there.  Already I’m uptight

There’s matches and a candle on the nightstand near my head

Oh Baby.  I want to be with you tonight instead

Let’s just Stay Home Tonight.  See the moonlight laying on the leaves

Hear the night wind whisper to the trees

I’ll light a candle and you make some tea and we’ll turn out the light

Lets just Stay Home Tonight

Well I know I’m a super-romantic, but you’re looking so right tonight

And our lives get a little bit shorter everyday

Let’s not take tonight for granted, in the west there’s still a glow

Let’s just stay home, the crowd will never know

Let’s just Stay Home Tonight.  See the moonlight laying on the leaves.

Hear the night wind whisper to the trees

I’ll light a candle and you make some tea and we’ll turn out the light

Let’s just Stay Home Tonight
